Text Box: John Wayne Airport is located in beautiful Orange County, California, the home of Disneyland. John Wayne Air Traffic Control Tower consists of approximately 25 Air Traffic Controllers that are employed by the Federal Aviation Administration. John Wayne Tower controls approximately a 5 mile ring from the center of the airport up to two thousand four hundred feet high of class Charlie airspace. In this 5 mile ring, the controllers in the tower clear planes for take-off and landings, control numerous helicopter operations, control small aircraft in a closed traffic pattern, authorize and separate aircraft transitioning through the airspace, and provide class Charlie services. Approximately 11 air carrier companies utilize John Wayne Airport on a daily basis, with multiple flights scheduled to various destinations. John Wayne airport houses flight schools, two transient locations, and hundreds of home-based general aviation aircraft.
Retirement eligibility in this tower, as well as many other Air Traffic Facilities, is climbing at a rapid rate. The hiring rate gap behind these retirements is severe; resulting in fear that safety is being compromised in our skies above. The National Air Traffic Controller’s Association, the Air Traffic Controller’s Union, has been in a fight to correct this problem, as well as other problems dealing with the “Contract” that the FAA has imposed without agreement from NATCA.
This “Contract”, commonly referred to as a “Nontract” is affecting all Air Traffic Controller’s throughout the Federal Aviation Administration. These imposed work rules have resulted in decreases in “Controller Incentive Pay”, the stop to future raises in base salary, scheduling changes, leave bidding handicaps, and many other issues. This has in-turn affected morale and turned it into an all time low.
